Identification
Shots rely on “Fine” or “Gross” motor skills, or both.
Examples of shots using fine motor skills are:
- Drop shots
- Drop volleys
- Soft angle shots
- A short angle ground stroke (not hit with pace but with extreme accuracy)
- Slice backhands
Examples of shots using gross motor skills are:
- A crushing overhead (not necessarily hit with any precision, just hit to the center of the court with a lot of force)
- A “sitting duck” forehand in mid-court hit with extreme power
Examples of other elements within the Physical component (e.g., agility) that require gross motor skills in the technique or movement are:
- Pivoting to change direction
- Explosive first step to intercept the ball
- The scissor kick on an overhead
Shots that are a combination of both fine and gross motor skills are:
- A topspin lob which must be hit with deft touch and with powerful spin
- A topspin or “kick” serve where the legs and trunk are used to generate power and hit a shot with extreme spin and accuracy
- A slice serve
