Identification

Shots rely on “Fine” or “Gross” motor skills, or both.

Examples of shots using fine motor skills are:

  1. Drop shots
  2. Drop volleys
  3. Soft angle shots
  4. A short angle ground stroke (not hit with pace but with extreme accuracy)
  5. Slice backhands

Examples of shots using gross motor skills are:

  1. A crushing overhead (not necessarily hit with any precision, just hit to the center of the court with a lot of force)
  2. A “sitting duck” forehand in mid-court hit with extreme power

Examples of other elements within the Physical component (e.g., agility) that require gross motor skills in the technique or movement are:

  1. Pivoting to change direction
  2. Explosive first step to intercept the ball
  3. The scissor kick on an overhead

Shots that are a combination of both fine and gross motor skills are:

  1. A topspin lob which must be hit with deft touch and with powerful spin
  2. A topspin or “kick” serve where the legs and trunk are used to generate power and hit a shot with extreme spin and accuracy
  3. A slice serve
